The DJ Guide to Coachella 2011

Going to Coachella this year?
Every year at Coachella, live music lovers discover some of our favorite Djs that have been rocking nightclub decks for years. Back in 2006, Daft Punk made headlines at Coachella, attracting more new fans to electronic dance music. The following year, MSTRKRFT came in and turned heads. A year later, who was that DJ with the big mouse head? Coachella also does a great job booking “the veterans” like Kraftwerk, Danny Tenaglia, Louie Vega, and Carl Cox to name a few.

This is a quick DJ mix I created for all those who are unfamiliar with the DJs/Electronic artists performing this year. I’ve written a little about each artist in my mix. My top 5 DJ performance recommendations are also listed at the bottom. ENJOY!!!

FREE TO DOWNLOAD (just click on the [down arrow] icon)

1. “Star Guitar” – Chemical Brothers
This is one of the few pieces of vinyl that I still pull out to listen to. Check out their music video too, its one of my all time favorites.
2. “M.A.N.I.A.C” – Sander Kleinenberg
I’ve been a fan since his track “The Fruit”. Good Stuff!
3. “Du What U Do” (Trentemoller mix) – Yoshimoto
This was one of the tracks that first put Trentemoller in the spotlight several years back.
4. “Rocking with the Best” (Rene Amesz remix) – Laidback Luke
I first saw Laidback Luke performing at a private Stealth Records party in WMC 5 years ago. Not many people knew of him at the time. Since then, he’s become a household name in the industry and many Europeans still mistaken think Im him.
5. “Hearts on Fire” (Miidnight Juggernauts remix) – Cut Copy
One of my favorite remixes of last year. Cut Copy is gonna be a crowd pleaser
6. “Sugar” (Armand Van Helden remix) – Scissor Sisters
Armand is one of the producer/Djs that got me into house music. I couldnt find a digital copy of this song (which is good), so I dusted off this vinyl track for everyone to enjoy. Scissor Sisters will be a fun show too.
7. “Barbara Streisand” (SOI’s Burt Reynolds remix) – Duck Sauce
Duck Sauce aka A-Trak & Armand Van Helden have been coming out with some fun, funky party music. I found this Burt Reynold remix which is even more dope!!
8. “Let Me Think About It” Ida Corr & Fedde Le Grand
I’ve been a fan of Fedde’s since his releases on Flamingo Recors. It good to see him in the spotlight after releases like “Put Your Hands up for Detroit” and recently with “Back n Forth” feat. Mr.V
9. “Countin Down the Days” (Axwell remix) – Sunfreaks
Axwell and Steve Angello are making their way to Coachella. It would be awesome if Sebastien Ingrosso was there for them to do a Swedish House Mafia set.
10. “One Eye Shut” (Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso remix) – Robbie Rivera
My favorite Angello remix. Had to pull out the vinyl for this one. Paris Hilton was at Beyond Wonderland, maybe she’ll be at Steve’s set. HAHAHHA jk (search Paris HIlton and Steve Angello if you wanna know the details)
11. “Dancin” – Erick Morillo
I’ve seen Erick DJ numerous times, the last being this past summer at Pacha Ibiza. There’s a good change you might see one of his loyal fans, P. Diddy, appear for his set, especially since Lauren Hill is performing on the same night.
12. “Komm” Anthony Rother & Sven Vath
Although Anthony Rother is still unknown here stateside, I’m super excited to see Sven Vath finally do a massive US event. He’s packed stadiums, festivals, etc. A true example of how it takes years for the US to get with the program.
13. “Another Way” – Paul Van Dyk
Yes, Ill admit it, I was into Trance at one point. Of my 30 trance records, this is the first one I ever bought back in 1999 (i think)
14. “Scorchio” – Sasha & Emerson
And, I think this was the 2nd Trance records I bought.
15. “Bungee” – Afrojack & Bobby burns
Afrojack has been tearing it up lately.
16. “Percolator” (Riva Starr remix) – Cajmere
Riva Starr has been coming up the past few years. I love this remix of this Cajmere aka Green Velvet track.
17. “Shake & Pop” (DJ Sneak remix) – Green Velvet
I wonder how crazy the crowd will get when he throws down “La La Land”.
18. “Hot Mess” – Chromeo
I just got this new Chromeo track. Its stuck in my head at the moment.
19. “Office Boy” (CSS remix) – Bonde Do Role
Another fun track, remixed by CSS.
20. “UFO” – Jack Beats
Jack Beats is climbing the ranks fast!!
21. “Casino Royale” – DJ Zinc – fabric 3
Since most of my Drum N Bass records comprise of Dillinja and LTJ Bukem vinyl, I had to pull the last DnB tracks from my “Fabric Live” CD compilations (a series I highly recommend). The first time I saw DJ Zinc was at Fabric Live during the beginning years of Fabric. I was hooked!! and also sad that the new DnB sound coming out of London took a while to hit the US that year.
22. “True Playaz Style” – DJ Hype
Along with DJ Zinc, DJ Hype played at Fabric that night I was there. His Fabric Live compilation is one of my top CD mixes (from the hundreds I have)
23. “Snapped It” – Krust
Although Krust will not be at Coachella this year, I had to include this track with DJ Hype showing off his scratching skills. BOOOM!!!
24. “Make it Tonight” – High Contrast
His True Colors album was HUGE when it came out. Its definitely a great introduction to the world of DnB
25. “So Nice” (DJ Marky & XRS remix) – Bebel Gilberto
Its gonna be a treat to have DJ Marky and his Latin DnB sounds.

Just a few notes:
- I forgot to include a Boys Noize track, who I highly recommend checking out.
- For all you Dubstep fans, sorry I didnt include your DJs in this mix. I just didnt have any Dubstep tracks. I only own a Benga album, sorry.
- Same goes for Joachim Garraud and other Djs I might have missed.
- Please forgive me for mixing in Trance music right after Sven Vath. hahaha I think Sven would be OK that its a PVD track.
- I was thinking about adding Duran Duran for being an inspiration for alot of DJs, but they get enough attention.
- In the 10+ years Ive been DJing, this is the most commercial DJ mix Ive down (in House Music standards), therefore I apologize to any fans who are used to my “underground” sound.

My 5 Coachella DJ recommendations:
* Chemical Brothers – They’re the Chemical Brothers, no explanation needed.
* Erick Morillo – Before the hype of the Swedish House Mafia, there was Erick Morillo. Be prepared to see people like P.Diddy as DJ cheerleaders.
* Afrojack – Just find a couple Afrojack DJ mixes…. dayam!!
* Green Velvet – Another fun show. When and if he drops La La Land, the crowd is gonna love it.
* Boys Noize – His sets have yet to disappoint me. Non stop dancing with massive peaks and drops!!!

Honorable Mentions:
* Sven Vath – One of my all time favorites and and a legend. Will people appreciate his set? People familiar with Cocoon Ibiza will be.
* DJ Hype – Same goes for Hype. All the DnB heads will support, but will Hype grab live-music goers attentions and keep em on the dancefloor?
* Duck Sauce – Its gonna be a fun set. I hope they get a good timeslot.

Im doing a Limited CD giveaway of this mix. If you’d like a copy, just go to facebook.com/djfrankzacarias and post on my wall that you want the “DJ Guide to Coachella CD”. Or, shoot me an email at coachellapromo(at)frankzacarias.com

WMC 2011 – The House Movement staff recommendations – Frank Zacarias

So as well all know, WMC and Ultra are on different weeks. As I was browsing through the party listings, I noticed there weren’t a wide array of big named Djs from ALL genres. My guess is there’s gonna be a huge age difference btw both weeks, especially since Ultra isn’t this week (although I did see DJ Chuckie’s name listed several times this week, but not as much as I saw DJ Spinna’s name listed hahahaha). This week may be a throw-back “Old School” WMC. Overall, I hope I’m wrong and we see NEW and old faces this week.

New album from Soulstice May 17th on OM Records

In 1989 Gabriel Rene and Mei-Lwun Yee were working on a hip-hop track in the Rene family studio. “The track was cool,” says Gabriel, “but Mei-Lwun and I couldn’t rap.” They asked little sister Gina to give it a try, and the rest is history. It wasn’t til…l some time later that Soulstice finally materialized after collaboration between Andy Caldwell and Gabriel in 1995. “I knew the first time I worked on a track with Gabe that this was right. Making music with my brother was where I was supposed to be. The chemistry between all of us was so obvious and it was such a natural high whenever we’d get together.” reflects Gina. Approaching production from a collaborative standpoint, Soulstice often developed many of the sounds and ideas they used from the freestyle sessions they originally became known for. Soulstice continued to refine their sound with emotive song writing and detailed arrangements. From playing to a few hundred people at 111 Minna St to playing sold out shows at the 1200 capacity historic Fillmore Theatre, SF, Soulstice have come a long way in their musical journey. “We live and breathe our music, everything comes from us. The song is king, it’s all about the lyrics.” says Andy. “Like a lyrical journal, I lay out my experiences and melodies to connect to the present in our music. I get the feeling that the whole band’s lyrical ability to be so honest about the struggle of growing into adulthood really brings the listener in.” describes Gina. Stay tuned for their new album ‘In the Light’ coming on May 17th on Om Records.

The Stealth EP by Martin Aquino

A great tribal edged beat that just keeps rolling .. Martin Aquino hails from the east .. and you can hear those infulances in his beats .. Now firmly rooted in the San Francisco Scene expect to hear more from this talented producer ..

Martin Aquino is one half of The Corporate Scandals (a duo formed with Carlos Tino in 2008), Aquino branches out on his own for a pair of driving club tracks released on Joeski’s Aztec Tribalism label. The Stealth EP epitomizes Aquino’s New York-flavored house music sound with “Stealth,” a peak-time banger with a rolling bass line and hypnotic sampled vocal hook, and “Heavy Luggage,” a more tribal outing with techy stabs and a solid, deep groove. It’s a sterling effort that sounds right at home on Joeski’s label and establishes Martin Aquino as one to watch.

San Francisco favorite Brian Salazar shares with us how he chooses his tracks and also his favorites for January 2011. “I choose my tracks from a spectator point of view, and not just as a dancer, DJ, or a musician.  I want anyone from any musical background to walk into my set and be instantly submerged”.  Dedicated to music as a whole from jazz, disco, soul, R&B, funk, reggae, old school, classical, and salsa, Brian Salazar has fine-tuned his ear to introduce a sound that is refreshing, intellectual, and catchy.  Additionally, the background of being a dancer has elevated his stage presence and solidified his reputation as a crowd pleaser.  “A dancer-turned-dj knows what to play to make people dance.”

Top 10 January 2011 : Soul Luciani

Soul Luciani brings to house music a passion that is both deeply infused in the music, and at the same time, transcends it.  He recognizes that a good sound is the foundation of a good party, and that a carefully crafted mix that elicits and magnifies the dancers’ emotions in a carefully choreographed sequence will build that party to a crescendo, creating an unforgettable experience that people will want to return to again and again.  At the same time, Soul sees house music as a crucial thread in the tapestry of life.  It is, to him, a way of life – a philosophy that uplifts, breaks barriers, draws strength from diversity and teaches its listeners that we are all drawn together by the common rhythms of life.

Soul currently settled in Oakland, California, a city rich in diversity that in many respects mirrors Soul’s own life experience.  His current venture, This Must Be The Place, draws upon both his global travels and his inner journey to bring to The Bay a musical and cultural experience unlike any seen here before.

This Must Be The Place
was created with the constitution to continue a long tradition of preserving and forwarding the underground dance music culture no matter how much resistance is met along the way.

WMC Survival Guide : the WMC Veteran

It’s that time of year again, when electronic music lovers all over the world start to plan out their trip to the beautiful, exotic city of Miami. The location is perfect, just like key be to lock. The rush of the sound mimics that of the hypnotic waves the ocean brings, not to mention the feeling of paradise those palm trees give. It’s the perfect combination; fresh beats, hot heat, cocktails to cool you down, all surrounded by the energy that just ties everyone together. We all live for the music, so why not revel in a week of celebration with each other?

Kinda hard to resist, right?

That’s why this will be, not 1, not 2, but my 8th year going! I know - I can never get enough. Being that I’ve gone so often, there are some tips I’d like to share with those of you going for the first time. If you’ve gone before, still stay tuned as you may gain from these tips as well.

Tip #1 – Plan ASAP: This isn’t like your normal, “I’ll do whatever & arrive fashionably late for the party!” Not even close. The sooner you start planning (I recommend when dates are released, usually Oct.) the more carefree you’ll be for this ultra fun week. That includes rounding up your people, deciding who’s truly down to live it up and scoping out places to stay. In my experience, if you have a larger group, staying in a condo or house for the week is best and way more affordable! South beach hotels love to jack up the prices, as they know this week is where they make the most money.

Tip #2 – Booze & Grub: On the real, this is where most your money goes, if you’re not smart about it. There are plenty of liquor stores around, so peep those out & make yourself some drinks before you head out. It’s like Vegas, you can pretty much walk & drink everywhere, so make the most of your pennies, because drinks inside some venues can be well over $15 a piece! WetWillies, off 8th & Ocean St., is one of my favorite spots; just two Superman special mixed smoothies and you are set to go! Swing by on your way to a party. As for food, they will entice you every step you take on Ocean Dr., so beware. One nice night for dinner is fine, but in Miami, they’ll tack on mad gratuity no matter how small your party. Fill your room with snacks & stay hydrated!

Tip #3 – Packing Smart: When you think of Miami, you think glitz & glam .. but not for the conference. You want to be comfortable! Bring lots of loose clothing that will be easy to toss off if you get too hot. The humidity & winds there are no joke. Expect the unexpected. Pack shoes you can walk in, because to get cabs in south beach aren’t as easy as you would think; it’s better to walk. Sunscreen, band-aids & Tylenol are just a few items you should bring with you, as well.

Tip #4 – Parties: The great thing about the conference is that WMC provides “The List” which is like your bible all week! Parties will be added daily as it gets closer to the week of. A nice feature is that on that site you can save lists of parties that you’re interested in attending and just print out those parties to keep handy in your hotel room. Some parties, especially the day ones, actually have free guest lists, if you sign up early. Look out for them and print out the email confirmations they send you as proof. Get a folder, be organized ahead of time, because I guarantee once you are there, you’ll lose your mind!

Following these tips and having an open-minded, carefree group surrounding you, you are bound to have the time of your life! You’ll leave WMC with new friends, new beats & inspiration to carry you to through the rest of the year. It’s a memorable experience and let me just tell you, that every year I go, it’s completely different. Like I said, expect the unexpected and feed off the vibrant energy the people give!

See you all out there!

Peace & Love,
Vanessa Marie

“House is a Feeling” video project

"House is a Feeling" video project

The way we create, record and produce music is constantly evolving.  There are no exceptions to how technology shapes the sound of House Music.  The spectrum of house is continually pushed left and right by today’s creative artists – so much that sub-genres have room to become their own genre, and have.

“House Music to me has always been about the feeling, regardless of the sub-genre. As a music lover I’ve experienced moments I will never forget, and as a DJ seeing those moments manifest for others. For me that has always been the greatest reward behind the decks and on the dancefloor. This project will help share that with those that are curious what House is about. It will remind us all that no matter what style you listen to, if you love it, feel it, and support it – it’s House.”
Roger Moorehouse – TheHouseMovement.com

Has technology distanced us from the sound or style we once knew and fell in love with? Some would argue we’ve lost track of our roots.  What’s funky to me, is no longer funky to you. What I call Electro, you call Deep. What I consider Deep, you call boring. What I call Soulful, is no longer full of Soul. This creates a divide within our culture. We want to prove to you that despite these walls, the essence of house music is within us all.

“We want to reacquaint house heads with the core concept of house music.  This is an opportunity for you to express how house music moves you.  Our project is a testament to the significance of house music despite its changing face and the borders it has crossed.  We all know how it moves us, but you’ll love seeing how others get down!”
Brian Cabalic – iLoveHouseMusic.com

Here’s the Game plan

Our team will produce a 7 minute house music video.  The video will be an orchestrated compilation of photos and video submitted house music fans who pledge a certain amount. You must express how house music makes you feel through facial or body expression, motion or emotion. You may listen to ANY style of house to record your feeling. Listen to the style you love most and let it take control! We want to show the world how house music moves you!

Traditionally, music videos are only about 4 minutes in length. We are faced with the challenge of maintaining the viewers attention through an entire 7 minute house track. This is where we get creative w/ the transitions, expressions, and videography used to represent key elements of a house track.  The Intro, the verses, choruses, break down, the build up, and yes, even the mix out.  We are ready for this challenge, and invite you to contribute in your own creative way by being an actual part of the video.  Our message will not be complete without your support!

Stay tuned as we will soon announce how you can be part of the video!
